Celebrated Aussie comedian, writer and podcaster, Tom W Clarke breaks new ground with his debut book, Shoulda Been Higher: A Celebration of 30 Years of Triple J’s Hottest 100 and he invites you to dive into the colourful history of “the world’s greatest musical democracy”.
Known for his wit and passion for music, Tom’s book offers a fresh and alternative take on the iconic countdown which has annually charted listeners’ 100 favourite songs of the year for more than 30 years.
Since 1993, the Hottest 100 has become more than just music—it’s a cultural touchstone, representing beaches, barbecues, and bonfires, joy and despair, drama and debate, friendship and community. Shoulda Been Higher combines serious analysis with humour to explore the social, musical and cultural impact of the Hottest 100.
Packed with stats, stories and little-known facts, the book sparks fiery debate and celebrates the artists who have shaped Australian music. Whether you’re a die-hard fan or simply curious, this event promises lively conversations and insights.

Tom W Clarke is an obsessive music and sport nerd—he settled for writing about them once he realised that he possessed no relevant talent whatsoever. He hosts the podcast Spinning Around- 100 Songs that shaped the Australian sound, writes the music blog Fresh Local Produce and is a regular contributor to The Roar. He has performed stand-up comedy around Australia, including a run of sold-out solo shows at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. When he’s home in Melbourne, Tom can be found watching footy on the Fitzroy Hill, espousing the superiority of instant black coffee and walking until he finds inspiration (or a good sandwich shop, whichever comes first).
