Advocacy

The SDRC Advocacy Strategy (PDF 9.5MB) outlines our approach to engaging with other stakeholders and levels of government to realise better outcomes for the community.

What is Advocacy?

Advocacy is an activity by an individual or group that aims to influence decisions within political, economic and social institutions. Advocacy includes activities and publications to influence public policy, laws and budgets by using facts, their relationships, the media, and messaging to educate government, organisations and the public.

Why is it important?

Advocacy on behalf of communities is a fundamental role of Council. This is necessary where Council is not the direct provider of a service or function or where they require assistance in delivering particular services or functions from external parties or other levels of government, to better serve our community.

How does Council advocate?

Using evidence-based research, carefully planned and resourced advocacy campaigns and actions, Council advocates for the Southern Downs region by supporting and contributing to the following strategic partnerships:

  1. Local government/sector partnerships
  2. State and federal government partnerships
  3. Community or peak body partnerships
  4. Business and industry partnerships
