Saving water and reducing household water bills doesn’t have to cost a cent, with Southern Downs Regional Council inviting residents to bring in their existing showerhead and swap it for a free water efficient model through Council’s Residential Showerhead Exchange Program.

Water efficient showerheads can more than halve water use, cutting water use to just 9 litres per minute compared to 20 litres per minute from standard models and saving households over 40 litres of water in a four minute shower.

Southern Downs Mayor Melissa Hamilton said the showerhead exchange program delivers real savings for households while supporting long term water security across the Southern Downs.

“The last major drought highlighted just how important everyday water saving choices are, and many households have continued those behaviours even as conditions improved,” Mayor Hamilton said.

“Showers account for more than a third of indoor household water use, and upgrading to a water efficient showerhead is one of the simplest ways residents can significantly reduce water consumption without sacrificing convenience.

“By making small changes today, households can help protect the region’s water supply while also lowering household water bills.

Portfolio Councillor for Productive Communities Cr Carla Pidgeon said the exchange program formed part of Council’s broader approach to water security.

“Council is also continuing to invest in drought resilient infrastructure, including the rollout of smart meters across the Southern Downs and ongoing improvements at Connolly Dam,” Cr Pidgeon said.

“These projects, combined with community led water saving efforts, strengthen the region’s ability to manage future dry periods.”
