Safety improvements have been locked in for the Glen Road and Lyndhurst Lane intersection in Rosenthal Heights following the successful allocation of $280,000 through the Australian Government’s Black Spot Program.
The upgrades are expected to significantly enhance driver awareness at the crash prone intersection where vehicles from Lyndhurst Lane have frequently failed to give way, with improved signage and delineation, intersection widening, a speed limit reduction and vegetation clearing to improve sight lines.
Southern Downs Mayor Melissa Hamilton said the successful funding outcome reflects a strong commitment to improving road safety across the region.
“Council manages a wide-ranging transport program, and the Black Spot Program plays a crucial role by enabling us to address known high risk locations without placing additional financial pressure on local ratepayers,” Mayor Hamilton said.
“Every serious crash we can prevent makes a real difference to our community, and improving safety at dangerous roads and intersections remains a priority for Council as part of our broader commitment to creating a safer and more liveable region.
“Council regularly reviews crash data and community feedback to identify locations that require attention, and this intersection has consistently stood out as an area where safety improvements are needed.
“Now that funding has been secured, Council can deliver targeted works that will address visibility issues and reduce the risk of future crashes, making the intersection safer for everyone who uses it.”
Mayor Hamilton also added that projects funded through the Black Spot Program delivered local economic benefits.
“In addition to improving road safety, these types of projects support local employment by creating work opportunities for locals, which helps strengthen our regional economy.”
Works will be scheduled following detailed design and approvals, with the community kept informed ahead of construction commencing.
Black Spot projects that meet the Government’s funding criteria include safety works such as improving sight distances, improving curves, removing road side hazards, increasing safety at intersections and providing protection to pedestrians.
The Australian Government’s Black Spot Program is funded through the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, Sport and the Arts and is administered through the Queensland Government’s Department of Transport and Main Roads.
