Extra improvements have been included as part of the upgrade works at WIRAC to deliver a safer and modern facility for the community to enjoy.

The original planned works were delivering a new aquatic filtration system, pool tiles and surface repairs and a refresh to the change rooms.

As works progressed, opportunities for some additional works were identified in the pools. Council has taken the opportunity to complete a full bathroom refurbishment, painting and other upgrades including a refreshed whale feature during the current closure.

Mayor Melissa Hamilton said that by doing this extra work now, the facility will reopen with a much higher standard and with less disruption in the future.

“WIRAC has been an important part of community life for more than 25 years,” Mayor Hamilton said.

“We know people will be really excited with the improvements. The facility is looking great, it’s safer and the pool systems have been modernised.”

Mayor Hamilton said the roof replacement will still be needed in the future, but steps have already been taken to make that process easier and reduce future closures.

“Council has installed netting to the ceiling so now we can design future works with less disruption to daily operations,” she said.

Council is planning to hand the facility back to the operator in late June, with the aquatics hall now scheduled to re-open on 1 July 2026.
