Tourism, local business and community events across the Southern Downs are set to benefit from a strategic $40,000 reinvestment to boost the region’s economy and vibrancy.

Following a decision at the Ordinary Council Meeting on Wednesday 27 May the decision, the event funding will be allocated as follows:
• Granite Belt Wine Tourism Association – $10,000
• Stanthorpe and Granite Belt Chamber of Commerce – $10,000
• Warwick Chamber of Commerce – $10,000
• Minor events (assessed under Council’s Grants Policy and Event Sponsorship Guidelines) – $10,000

Southern Downs Mayor Melissa Hamilton said the decision ensures the funding continues to deliver strong outcomes for the region.
“With funding available in this year’s budget, we’re pleased to reinvest it into initiatives that will deliver immediate benefits for our region,” Mayor Hamilton said.

“This is about getting the balance right—supporting tourism, strengthening our local businesses and helping minor events get their start in the Southern Downs.”
The allocation to the Granite Belt Wine Tourism Association will support promotion of the region as a premier food and wine destination, helping to attract visitors and drive economic activity.

“Fresh off Stanthorpe’s win as Queensland’s Top Tourism Town, this is a prime opportunity for the Granite Belt Wine Tourism Association to harness additional funding and showcase the region ahead of a bumper winter tourism season,” Mayor Hamilton said.

Meanwhile, both Chambers of Commerce will use the funding to strengthen local business capability, support networking and deliver initiatives that enhance resilience in a challenging economic environment.

The remaining $10,000 will be made available to support smaller community events through a competitive assessment process, ensuring grassroots initiatives also benefit from Council’s investment.

“Events both large and small play a vital role in bringing people together, supporting local businesses and showcasing what makes our communities unique,” Mayor Hamilton said.

“This balanced approach ensures the benefits are shared widely and continue to build momentum across tourism, business and community life.”

Council remains committed to working collaboratively with event organisers and stakeholders to support future hallmark events while ensuring public funds deliver maximum value to the region.
