WIRAC Refurbishment Complete as Aquatic Centre Prepares to Reopen
Southern Downs Regional Council is pleased to announce the 2026 Warwick Indoor Recreation and Aquatic Centre (WIRAC) pool refurbishment works are now complete, marking a major milestone in the renewal of one of the region's most important community facilities.
The refurbishment has significantly extended the life of the aquatic centre through essential infrastructure upgrades, safety improvements and modernised pool systems that will benefit residents and visitors for years to come.
Southern Downs Mayor Melissa Hamilton said the project was an important investment in ensuring WIRAC could continue serving the community well into the future.
"For more than 25 years, WIRAC has been an important part of community life, supporting learn-to-swim programs, school carnivals, rehabilitation, fitness and recreation," Mayor Hamilton said.
"These refurbishment works have modernised key infrastructure behind the scenes while also delivering noticeable improvements to the user experience through refreshed amenities and enhanced safety features."
"By completing these essential works now, we've significantly extended the life of the facility and reduced the need for ongoing disruptions in the future."
The refurbishment included the replacement of the main pool filtration system, pool safety rectification works including tiling, grouting, slip resistance improvements and internal pool repairs, together with a full refurbishment of the main amenities, painting and additional improvements identified during construction.
The aquatic facilities are now back with YMCA, who will undertake final operational preparations before reopening the pool to members and the wider community in the coming weeks.
Mayor Hamilton thanked the community for their patience throughout the project.

The project forms part of Council's ongoing investment in maintaining safe, modern and reliable community infrastructure across the Southern Downs.
The WIRAC refurbishment project was jointly funded by Southern Downs Regional Council and the Queensland Government.
