Retirement can be one of life’s most significant turning points with a mix of uncertainty, change and new possibilities. A series of free community sessions on Tuesday 23 June will help Southern Downs residents navigate that transition with confidence, purpose and a focus on wellbeing.

Presented by respected clinical psychologist Dr John Barletta in partnership with Darling Downs Health, Queensland Men’s Shed Association and Southern Downs Regional Council, Health and Wellbeing in Later Life: Flourishing in Retirement and Ageing Well will offer practical guidance and tips for anyone approaching retirement or already enjoying it who wants to stay well, connected and fulfilled.

Dr Barletta will explore the emotional and practical realities of retirement, recognising that while transitions can bring challenges, they also offer opportunities for growth and renewal. Sessions will focus on the ‘what’ and ‘how’ of wellbeing, helping participants clarify their goals and identify what matters most in later life.

Southern Downs Mayor Melissa Hamilton said the sessions will provide an important opportunity for residents to take a proactive approach to their health and wellbeing in retirement.

“Retirement is a major life transition, and having the right support and knowledge can make all the difference in how people experience this new stage of life,” Mayor Hamilton said.

“Dr Barletta brings a wealth of knowledge and real-world experience, and we’re pleased to offer this opportunity for our community to hear from him directly.”

Portfolio Councillor for Healthy Communities Cr Sarah Deane said the sessions would play an important role in supporting residents to maintain health, connection and a strong sense of purpose in later life.

“These sessions will give residents practical tools to stay connected, maintain their wellbeing and make the most of the opportunities that retirement can bring,” Cr Deane said.

Darling Downs Health spokesperson Richard Henshaw said while retirement was an exciting time for people, it could also bring anxiety for many of those used to working their entire lives.

“It’s important people plan their retirement and be prepared for what is sometimes a shock to the system. These sessions are a great way to get some professional advice and also talk to others in your community about what retirement will look like for you,” Mr Henshaw said.

He said the sessions were also an opportunity for people in retirement to find out more information about who to speak to if they or their loved ones were struggling mentally with the transition into the next stage of life.

Through funding from the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care, Dr Barletta developed the Wellbeing Workbook – A Comprehensive Guide to Creating a Healthy, Happy, Productive, Long Retirement. All attendees will receive a free PDF copy of this valuable resource.
