Essential sewer infrastructure across Warwick and Stanthorpe is set for a major upgrade, with a $2.9 million works project to improve reliability and reduce the risk of failures.
Jointly funded by Southern Downs Regional Council and the Queensland Government, the project includes extensive CCTV inspections, sewer main relining and maintenance hole rehabilitation to extend asset life and minimise chokes and overflows as well as leaks.
Southern Downs Mayor Melissa Hamilton said the works deliver on the commitment to the community to deliver the basics well.
“These upgrades are exactly the kind of investment our new 2026-2031 Corporate Plan prioritises — delivering reliable everyday infrastructure and services and maintaining our existing infrastructure before expanding,” Mayor Hamilton said.
Mayor Hamilton acknowledged the importance of the partnership with the Queensland Government to deliver the upgrades.
“The Queensland Government’s contribution helps us to deliver these upgrades, but it’s only a start. Like every Council across Queensland, we’re calling for a substantial boost to funding from the Federal and State Governments to ensure that regional communities can always rely on modern water and wastewater systems.
Portfolio Councillor for Liveable Communities Deputy Mayor Sheryl Windle said the latest investment demonstrates Council’s proactive approach to managing underground assets that are vital to the region’s health and growth.
“This is a significant investment in infrastructure most people never see, but everyone relies on every day,” Cr Windle said.
“By maintaining and renewing our sewer network, we are protecting our environment, supporting public health, and ensuring our towns continue to operate smoothly now and into the future.
“While sewer infrastructure is largely out of sight, it is one of the most essential services Council provides. This investment helps ensure our network remains reliable and supports the growth we are expecting in the years ahead.”
The project will include works across Warwick and Stanthorpe for:
• Cleaning and CCTV inspection of approximately 30 kilometres of sewer mains
• Relining of around 10 kilometres of sewer mains
• Inspection and condition assessment of approximately 500 maintenance holes.
Work is scheduled to commence in mid-July, with some minor, temporary disruptions expected in localised areas. Council will provide advance notice to affected residents and businesses where required.
Since 2021, Council has committed more than $4.1 million to upgrading the region’s sewer network, ensuring continued service reliability and improved environmental protection.
The program is jointly funded through the Queensland Government’s Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program (LGGSP) 2024–2028, which has contributed $1.72 million, alongside $1.15 million from Council, bringing the total project value to $2.87 million.
