Southern Downs Regional Council will mark Australia Day 2026 with an official celebration in Allora on Monday 26 January, and invites residents to the Allora Community Hall for a morning of pride, recognition and community spirit.

This year’s event will welcome up to 24 new citizens and honour outstanding individuals who have demonstrated exceptional service and leadership within the community with the presentation of the Southern Downs Citizen of the Year Awards.

Southern Downs Mayor Melissa Hamilton said the occasion is an opportunity to reflect on what it means to be Australian while celebrating the region’s diversity and achievements.

“Australia Day is about recognising our shared values, welcoming new citizens and honouring local heroes who make our community stronger,” Mayor Hamilton said.

“It is a day to come together, celebrate our identity and foster the spirit of unity that defines the Southern Downs.”

Portfolio Councillor for Inspired Communities Cr Morwenna Harslett encouraged the community to join in the celebration.

“Australia Day in Allora is a moment to celebrate the connections that make our region special,” Cr Harslett said.

“What excites me most is seeing families, neighbours and newcomers gather side by side, enjoying music, food and laughter. That’s the heartbeat of our region.

“I encourage everyone to come along, enjoy the festivities and share in the pride of being part of this community.”

The celebrations will feature a family-friendly morning tea with lamingtons, scones and meat pies, with live music from local award-winning pop/folk duo Nine Year Sister.

The Australia Day 2026 Citizenship Ceremony and community awards event is assisted by the Australian Government through the National Australia Day Council.
