Southern Downs Regional Council is investing in the long-term future of the Warwick Indoor Recreation and Aquatic Centre (WIRAC), with an upgrade for the region’s only all-season indoor aquatic facility.

To deliver the works safely and efficiently, the aquatic facilities only at WIRAC will be temporarily closed for two months of work commencing on Monday 30 March 2026.

Importantly, the remainder of the centre will continue operating, including the hydrotherapy pool, indoor courts wellness room, group fitness room and gym, allowing many programs and activities to continue during the works.

Southern Downs Mayor Melissa Hamilton said the project represents a positive and future-forward investment in community health and wellbeing.

“For more than 25 years, WIRAC has been servicing our community with learn to swim lessons, school programs and carnivals, rehabilitation, fitness training and everyday recreation,” Mayor Hamilton said.

“As the facility has aged, Council is taking the opportunity to renew critical infrastructure, address safety and compliance requirements, and ensure the WIRAC pool can continue to serve our community for many more years.

“Council will work closely with Y Queensland to ensure minimal disruption to the other activities that will still be ongoing at the centre.”

By completing the upgrade during one coordinated shutdown of the aquatic areas, Council is minimising disruption and avoiding repeated closures, allowing the community to enjoy the benefits sooner and for longer.

The upgrade will deliver essential improvements, including renewed aquatic filtration infrastructure, enhanced pool safety, upgrades to address moisture and corrosion, and change room renovations to improve comfort, hygiene and durability across the facility.

Regular community updates will be provided before and during the closure, including specific information for schools, clubs and program users. Interested community members will be able to follow the progress on Council’s website at www.sdrc.qld.gov.au/wiracrefurbishment.

The aquatic facilities are scheduled to reopen on Monday 1 June 2026.
