Southern Downs volunteers will be celebrated this National Volunteer Week (18–24 May) with a series of free morning teas hosted by Southern Downs Regional Council to recognise the incredible contribution they make to the community.

National Volunteer Week is Australia’s largest annual celebration of volunteering, and this year’s theme, Your Year to Volunteer, highlights the many ways people can get involved to suit their interests, lifestyles and stages of life.

Southern Downs Mayor Melissa Hamilton said National Volunteer Week and the morning teas are an important opportunity to recognise the volunteers whose efforts are vital in building strong, inclusive and resilient communities.

“Volunteers are the quiet achievers of our community, and they connect people, create a sense of belonging and make a real difference, often without seeking recognition,” Mayor Hamilton said.

“Every volunteer contribution matters, whether it’s an hour a week or years of dedicated service.

“National Volunteer Week and the morning teas are our chance to say thank you and celebrate the impact volunteers have across our community.”

The morning teas will recognise volunteers from a wide range of community groups and services. These events aim to acknowledge the care, compassion and commitment volunteers bring to their roles, while also providing a chance to connect and celebrate together.

Portfolio Councillor for Inspired Communities Cr Morwenna Harslett said the theme Your Year to Volunteer reflects the changing face of volunteering.

“Volunteering doesn’t look the same for everyone, and people volunteer in different ways at different stages of life, from one off events to regular commitments, in person or behind the scenes,” Cr Harslett said.

“There’s no one way to volunteer, only just the way that it fits you.”

As well as thanking those already giving so much, National Volunteer Week is also a time to encourage others to get involved.

“We’d love 2026 to be the year more people discover the benefits of volunteering,” Mayor Hamilton said.

“Volunteering creates connection, purpose and belonging, not just for those being supported, but for volunteers themselves.”

Council encourages community members to attend local events during National Volunteer Week, show appreciation to volunteers they know, and consider how volunteering might fit into their own lives.
