The Gymnast vaults onto Stanthorpe's Art Trail

Stanthorpe’s celebrated art trail has welcomed another signature landmark with the unveiling of The Gymnast, a sculpture created by acclaimed artist and musician David Martin.

Located at Kilpa Park, the eye-catching work has been described by local artist and project advocate Gabriele Trabucco as a symbol of “playfulness, health, flexibility, and dynamism”, qualities that reflect both the spirit of the artwork and the vibrancy of the Stanthorpe community.

Portfolio Councillor for Inspired Communities, Cr Morwenna Harslett, said the arrival of The Gymnast demonstrates how public art can tell local stories while strengthening Stanthorpe’s reputation as a cultural destination.

“Public art showcases the creativity and culture of our region, and it enriches our community by creating spaces that inspire and connect people,” Cr Harslett said.

“The Gymnast adds exuberance to Stanthorpe’s art trail and it will be a drawcard for visitors, while giving locals another reason to feel proud of their community.”

Portfolio Councillor for Healthy Communities Cr Sarah Deane said the installation of The Gymnast in Kilpa Park contributed another point of interest to the open-air spaces of the town.

“Healthy communities are built on opportunities to enjoy the outdoors and connect with our surroundings,” Cr Deane said.

“By placing The Gymnast in Kilpa Park, we’re encouraging people to engage with art in a way that supports both physical wellbeing and cultural enrichment.” Council’s ongoing commitment to public art projects aims to improve cultural experiences across the Southern Downs, and The Gymnast provides another priceless opportunity for both residents and visitors to experience the power and beauty of art and engage in thoughtful reflection and conversation.
