A fresh vision for a vibrant community garden is sprouting in Killarney—and the community is invited to help shape its future.

Southern Downs Regional Council is seeking feedback on a proposal by Killarney Community Gardens Inc (KCGI) to transform part of Canning Park into an inclusive space for locals and visitors to connect with nature, learn new skills and foster a stronger sense of community.

KCGI President Beryl Rosser is enthusiastic about the initiative and said the vision goes beyond gardening.

“After seeing the wonderful impact and benefits of other community gardens, we are passionate about creating a community garden here in Killarney,” Ms Rosser said.

“It will be a place where all are welcome and feel safe, where we can grow and share produce together, and where we can learn and teach each other through gardening and cooking workshops.

“Our garden will be a place where people can meet for a chat in a nurtured garden or sit in solace for reflection. So much more than a garden, it is a place of community.”

The proposed design includes shared pathways, quiet seating areas, outdoor tables and chairs, fruit trees, a composting area/worm farm and accessible garden beds. The garden would span approximately 20m x 45m along Canning Park’s western boundary.

As the portfolio holder for parks, gardens and active recreation areas, Southern Downs Councillor Sheryl Windle encourages the community to review the proposal and provide feedback to help shape the future direction of the garden.

“Community gardens bring people together, promote healthy living, and support our connection to the environment,” Councillor Windle said.

“It’s about creating healthier, happier communities. Now is the time to tell us what matters most to you.”

Residents and visitors can view the proposed concept and complete a short survey online at https://www.sdrc.qld.gov.au/living-here/have-your-say/killarney-community-garden. Hard copies are also available at Council’s Customer Services Centres. Consultation closes on Friday 13 June 2025.
