Important road works will begin in June to address safety concerns at a notorious black spot on the intersection of Willi Street and Glen Road, Warwick.
Funded by the Australian Government’s Black Spot Program, the $529k project will deliver safer traffic flow by permanently closing Willi Street at Glen Road and redirecting vehicles via Tooth Street.
Southern Downs Mayor Melissa Hamilton said this Black Spot project targets one of the region’s hazardous intersections and will bring improved safety and economic benefits to the community.
"Improving road safety is a top priority for Council, and the Black Spot Program provides us with the opportunity to target high-risk areas without putting additional financial pressure on ratepayers,” Mayor Hamilton said.
“This intersection has been a persistent concern, and we’re pleased to move forward with a permanent solution that prioritises safety.
“Beyond safety, black spot projects also boost the local economy by supporting jobs during construction, and that is something Council is proud to champion.
"We’re grateful to have secured funding from the Australian Government to address safety concerns at this intersection.
“Council thanks the community for its cooperation and patience during construction of these important safety upgrades.”
To allow works to proceed safely and efficiently, staged road closures and detours will be in place throughout the project. Residents will have access to their properties at all times.
Through traffic will no longer be able to use the section of Willi Street between Glen Road and Tooth Street. A new cul-de-sac will be built at the eastern end, and access for residents will be via the western end.
The following upgrades will also be made to nearby intersections to improve traffic flow:
• Glen Road and Tooth Street will be widened and given dedicated turning lanes.
• Tooth Street and Willi Street will be enhanced to enable safer, more efficient travel.
Construction is expected to be completed by early October, weather permitting.
Council thanks the community for its patience and cooperation during these important works and reminds all drivers to follow detour signage for their safety and the safety of work crews.
The project is funded by the Australian Government’s Black Spot Program through the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts and is administered through the Queensland Government’s Department of Transport and Main Roads.
