The Allora Library is preparing to turn a new page in its story, with a temporary closure from Monday 28 July 2025 to facilitate its relocation to the newly redeveloped Allora Precinct
Open to the public from 1pm Monday 4 August 2025, the precinct upgrade has been funded by the Queensland Government’s Works for Queensland program to transform the existing Allora Senior Citizen Centre into a one-level, multi-purpose hub with improved accessibility and enhanced functionality.
Southern Downs Mayor Melissa Hamilton said it was good the community can move forward now that the future of the precinct is certain.
“A redeveloped Allora Precinct has been a long time coming, and I appreciate the engagement of the Allora community in helping to shape a local space that brings together essential services, learning opportunities and community connection,” Mayor Hamilton said.
“Thanks to the Queensland Government’s Works for Queensland funding we can complete the precinct upgrade, and let the community move forward and put its stamp on how the multi-purpose hub can become a well-utilised asset in this incredibly vibrant town.”
Council spokesperson for Productive Communities Cr Carla Pidgeon said the redevelopment responds to calls from the Allora community for a refreshed space that better reflects local needs and aspirations.
"The Allora community asked for a revitalised space that reflects its spirit and needs,” Councillor Pidgeon said.
“This redevelopment supports that vision, creating a welcoming hub that will serve as a central meeting point, a place to celebrate local culture, and a foundation for future growth.”
Council spokesperson for Inspired Communities Cr Morwenna Harslett said the new Allora Precinct recognises the evolving role of libraries as vibrant, inclusive spaces that foster connection, learning and community spirit.
“Libraries are gateways to opportunity, learning and belonging,” Councillor Harslett said.
“The new Allora Precinct embodies this philosophy, offering a modern, inclusive space where people of all ages can come together to learn, grow and thrive.
“Whether it’s a child discovering the joy of reading, a senior attending a digital skills workshop, or a local group hosting a community event, this space is designed to inspire and empower.”
Member for the Southern Downs James Lister said projects like this were at the heart of the Crisafulli Government’s Fresh Start for Queensland.
“The Crisafulli Government is committed to working with Councils across the state to deliver the vital projects they need to ensure their communities thrive, and this is a perfect example,” Mr Lister said.
“Improving community spaces and enhancing liveability are key to a thriving community, and I look forward to this new chapter for the Southern Downs.”
The redevelopment also includes upgrades to lighting, heating and septic systems, flexible spaces for community gatherings and a new after-hours entry to the community space to increase access and usability.
During the temporary library closure, the community will still have access to online library services at https://southerndowns.spydus.com/.
The Allora Precinct Redevelopment Project is proudly funded by the Queensland Government’s Works for Queensland program in partnership with Southern Downs Regional Council.
The precinct will be officially opened in October.
