A colourful celebration of Granite Belt birdlife is set to land in Stanthorpe’s Brock Park, with Southern Downs Regional Council approving a new public art project by local photographer Sandra McEwan.
Featuring large-scale photographic murals of native birds, the images will transform the exterior of the park’s public amenities, creating a visual statement that showcases the region’s unique biodiversity and adds artistic flair to the park’s open space.
Endorsed by the Public Art Reference Group (PARG), the project will form part of both the Stanthorpe Art Trail and the ever-popular Southern Downs Dunny Dash Trail to add a fresh layer to the region’s growing artistic tourism offerings.
Council spokesperson for Inspired Communities and PARG member Cr Morwenna Harslett said the murals are a recognition of the power of public art to celebrate the region’s identity and transform everyday places into meaningful experiences.
“This is another great example of how public art can help celebrate our region’s natural beauty and enliven everyday spaces,” Cr Harslett said.
“Sandra McEwan’s work tells a story about our local birdlife, and the project will grow the Stanthorpe Art Trail and add a fun new stop on the Southern Downs Dunny Dash Trail.”
Council spokesperson for Liveable Communities Cr Sheryl Windle said public art projects strengthen the region’s appeal as a tourism destination.
“Public art adds vibrancy to our parks and helps showcase the natural assets that make the Southern Downs so special,” Cr Windle said.
“By blending art, nature and storytelling, this project adds a unique experience to our parks and supports our growing network of tourism trails.
“It’s wonderful to see our public spaces being used in creative ways that attract visitors and celebrate our local environment.”
The Public Art Reference Group, comprising Council staff, gallery directors and a community representative, assessed the public art proposal in line with Council’s Public Art Policy and Procedure. The project is also eligible to apply for Regional Arts Development Funding following Council’s approval.
As part of the approval conditions, the artist will engage with the local community to inform them about the project before installation begins.
The Stanthorpe Art Trail and Southern Downs Dunny Dash Trail are available on the Southern Downs Visitor App which can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play.
