Allora is set to take a major step toward a more walkable and connected future, with Southern Downs Regional Council securing $20,000 in funding to develop a walking network plan that will support healthier, more active lifestyles in the community.
Funded through the Queensland Government’s 2025–26 Walking Local Government Grants program, the initiative will map key walking routes and identify upgrades to better connect residents with local schools, parks, shops and community facilities.
Southern Downs Mayor Melissa Hamilton said the plan will be an exciting opportunity to shape the future of active transport in Allora.
“It’s great news that we’ve secured this funding under the Queensland Government’s Walking Local Government Grants program. We’ll be able to plan for a future where walking is safer, easier and more enjoyable for everyone in Allora,” Mayor Hamilton said.
Council spokesperson for Healthy Communities Cr Sarah Deane said the project aligns with Council’s focus on supporting mental health through thoughtful, community-focused infrastructure.
“Investing in walking infrastructure is a win for both people and the planet. By encouraging active transport, we’re reducing emissions, improving public health, and creating safer, more vibrant streetscapes,” Cr Deane said.
Council spokesperson for Productive Communities Cr Carla Pidgeon said the plan would play a key role in designing safer, more connected streets that support wellbeing and community connection.
“We’ll be identifying key routes and upgrades that make walking a natural, healthy choice for getting around. This plan will help us design walking routes that connect people to the places they love in Allora,” Cr Pidgeon said.
The walking network plan will map priority walking routes, improve access to community facilities, and ensure pathways are inclusive and accessible. The project is set to begin in July 2025.
The grants are funded on a 50:50 basis between state and local governments, fostering collaboration to deliver long-term benefits for Queensland communities.
Council looks forward to working closely with the Allora community throughout the planning process.
