Symbols of strength, healing and hope are now part of Stanthorpe’s CBD streetscape, with four Totems of Hope sculptures proudly standing tall in the landscaped gardens along the High Street pedestrian crossing.

Gifted to the community by the Happy Potters and local artist Jennifer Gill, the handcrafted ceramic coil pot totems reflect a personal journey of lived experience.

The project was delivered through the Whistle Stop Community Garden and Happy Chat initiative, which brings people together through art, nature and conversation to promote mental wellbeing and reduce stigma.

While recent upgrades to the High Street pedestrian precinct have enhanced the area with new landscaping and street infrastructure, the Totems of Hope bring an emotional and cultural depth to the space, honouring community voices and shared experiences.

Local artist and counsellor, Jennifer Gill said: “A big thank you to all involved toward this success including Carol of the Whistle-Stop Community Garden who embraced the project and Kath Ives of Happy Chat. And a great big thank you to all the Happy Potters who participated in some way. I’ve heard people say that this has been the first time they have felt a part of the community, to be able to participate, and the love of being able to contribute to the community. I firmly believe that everyone has something to bring to enhance the community. I would say that this project is a confirmation that inclusion works.”

Council’s spokesperson for Healthy Communities, Cr Sarah Deane said: “These totems honour real experiences, and they show that strength can grow through vulnerability. Projects like this help reduce stigma surrounding mental health and spark important conversations.”

Council’s spokesperson for Inspired Communities, Cr Morwenna Harslett said: “Art has the power to tell stories that words alone cannot. The Totems of Hope are an example of how creativity can support healing and foster understanding. We’re proud to see this community-driven artwork become a lasting part of Stanthorpe’s streetscape.”

Council’s spokesperson for Liveable Communities, Deputy Mayor Sheryl Windle said: “These totems are not only a moving tribute to mental health journeys, they’re a creative and meaningful addition to our public gardens. As part of our parks and streetscape improvements, it’s important we create places that feel welcoming, uplifting and inclusive.”

The totems are entitled: Cycles of the Moon, Our Mother Earth, Community Together and We Rise like the Sun at Dawn.

Council encourages the community to take a moment to reflect on the significance of the totems during their next visit to High Street.

The journey for the Totems of Hope project started at the Whistle-Stop Community Garden, where a fifth totem by Megan Astill stands. More information about the project is available at https://whistlestopgarden.com.au/totems-of-hope.
