Challenges and opportunities for future-proofing agriculture in the Southern Downs will be workshopped at the 2025 Farming for the Future Expo, a free, full-day event showcasing the latest in innovation, sustainability, resilience and future-ready farming practices.

Southern Downs Regional Council has collaborated with the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, the University of Queensland and the Queensland Farmers’ Federation to offer a program of industry-led presentations, interactive displays, expert panels, ag-business support and career pathways information.

The expo will address topical issues including water and soil management, plant and animal health, renewable energy and farmer wellbeing, with a strong focus on ag-tech and sustainable practices.

Council’s spokesperson for Productive Communities Cr Carla Pidgeon said the expo will give producers the tools and insight into how to improve profitability and productivity with industry best-practice.

“Agriculture is the economic engine of the Southern Downs, and this expo is about future-proofing our farms and our communities,” Cr Pidgeon said.

“We are investing in our region’s biggest industry by bringing together the latest in ag-tech, research and practical know-how to help our producers stay competitive, sustainable and resilient in a rapidly changing world.

“Whether it’s improving soil health, managing water more efficiently or adopting cutting-edge technologies, the Farming for the Future Expo is about equipping our farmers with the tools and insights they need for the challenges and opportunities ahead.”

Council’s spokesperson for Healthy Communities Cr Sarah Deane highlighted the importance of sustainable farming practices to build a resilient future for the region’s agricultural industry.

“The future of agriculture depends on how we care for our land, our people and our environment,” Cr Deane said.

“This expo is a chance for the ag community to come together and explore how sustainable practices can strengthen not just our farms, but our regional economy.

“From students exploring career pathways to producers looking for innovative solutions, this expo offers something for everyone who wants to be part of a more resilient and forward-thinking Southern Downs.”
