Major road rehabilitation works to address pavement failures and drainage issues on East Street will commence the week beginning Tuesday 24 September, weather permitting.
Funded by the Australian Government’s Roads to Recovery program, the $1.2m project will be managed by Southern Downs Regional Council’s Infrastructure Works Department, utilising in-house labour and services.
Council’s Acting CEO Steve Johnston said the works will restore the road to a safe and serviceable condition as part of Council’s ongoing commitment to improving the safety of the region’s roads for the community and all road users.
“Maintaining and upgrading our road infrastructure is essential for safety and economic growth, and it’s crucial for Council to prioritise these efforts across the region,” Mr Johnston said.
“Local residents and businesses in the East Street area will still have access to their properties and Council staff will endeavour to minimise disruptions and delays for traffic where possible.
“The safety of road users and our staff during construction is paramount and following the directions of on-site officers and signage will go a long way to keeping the site incident-free and on schedule.
“This initiative is part of the Council’s ongoing commitment to deliver better service to the community, with safety always being an over-riding priority.”
Works will take place between the intersections of East/Freestone and East/Ogilvie Streets. Local traffic will operate under controlled arrangements during construction. The rehabilitation will be conducted in multiple stages and East Street will operate as a one-way road with access only via Freestone Road on occasions in the interest of safety and construction efficiency. Road users will be directed to use Ogilvie Street or Murphy Street for access to the Cunningham Highway or the CBD.
Council acknowledges that minor delays may be experienced and will continue to update the community as more information becomes available.
Council appreciates the community’s cooperation and patience as we work to repair infrastructure and ensure the safety of all road users. The project is expected to be completed by the end of February, weather permitting.
