Swanfels local Mick Bradford has been recognised by Southern Downs Regional Council (SDRC) for his contribution to celebrating the region’s rich horsepower and farming heritage through the annual Heavy Horse Day.

Mick was named as the latest recipient of the SDRC Volunteer Recognition Program at the Ordinary Meeting of Council on Wednesday 27 October 2022.

In nominating him for the accolade, Southern Downs Councillor Ross Bartley said Mick was inspirational in preserving and educating today’s generation on the farming practices of yesteryear.

“Since 2000, Mick has been a driving force behind the Heavy Horse Day which showcases heavy horses and horse power farming equipment from the 1800’s and 1900’s, when horsepower was really the power of the horse,” Councillor Bartley said.

“Together with his fellow Lions members, Mick worked tirelessly to organise and run these events to celebrate the pioneering days of our farming families.

“Mick’s decision to use these events as fundraisers for CareFlight is to be commended.

“Careflight offers an essential service to rural communities and has been a lifeline for many families in Southern Downs too.

“It is a great pleasure to honour Mick for his service to the region and show our appreciation for his selfless efforts to achieve great things for the community.”

Southern Downs Mayor Vic Pennisi said the program provided the opportunity for Council to acknowledge members of the community who go above and beyond the call of duty to achieve great things.

“Southern Downs is home to an army of individuals who make a true difference at a grass roots level to our community and liveability through their tireless contributions,” Mayor Pennisi said.

“These individuals are the engine room of our communities and it is their countless hours of service in our sporting clubs, environmental groups and arts, culture and civic services that make Southern Downs a great place to live, work, play and stay.”
