Do you have great ideas to drive economic growth in the region? The local business community and industry leaders have the golden opportunity to review and comment on the draft Southern Downs Economic Development Strategy 2022 – 2026 prior to it being adopted by Council.

Now open for public consultation until Sunday 13 March 2022, the draft strategy builds on four key pillars to guide the region’s future growth: Agriculture and Processing, Industry and Innovation, Tourism and Events, and Population Attraction and Retention.

In inviting comment, Mayor Vic Pennisi said the community’s feedback will be an important component in supporting and guiding the final framework to foster economic development.

“The Southern Downs is a rapidly growing region and we need to map a plan for economic, social and cultural prosperity,” Mayor Pennisi said.

“We have a united vision for the Southern Downs to forge ahead as a sustainable, environmentally conscious, affordable and safe community with a vibrant, diverse, innovative and progressive economy.

“The draft Southern Downs Economic Development Strategy 2022 – 2026 will be Council’s reference for prioritising the key strategies to leverage our existing strengths and pursue significant opportunities for growth.

“As Council moves closer towards finalising this fundamental document, we are asking the community to give insight and input on the direction of economic development across the region.

“By implementing a formal plan, we can take control of the region’s economic development, set clear and attainable objectives and design policies and programs to achieve them.”
