Winners of Sort-It Sally school holiday competition announced!

9 November 2021

When the Southern Downs Regional Council sent out the call in September this year for a new video/photo competition capturing the excitement that comes with the arrival of the weekly waste collection truck, the community responded with enthusiasm.

While it’s a weekly routine to place bins kerb side, bin collection day is a much anticipated highlight for some kids. The thrill of the big Cleanaway truck with its bright safety lights and beeps, cruising down the street, effortlessly lifting the wheelie bin off the ground with its Transformer-like arms and dumping the contents into its huge back-bin has a huge WOW factor.

Parents were invited to capture their kids’ excitement watching a ‘real-life-movie-in-motion’.

Two lucky families were treated this week to a visit by Sort-It Sally who delivered goody bags full of treasures to the region’s junior waste warriors.

Southern Downs Mayor Vic Pennisi said of the competition in September that he looked forward to seeing the competition entries roll in, just like the waste trucks.

“The region’s young and inquisitive minds are our biggest advocates for sustainable waste practices and are leading the way towards a cleaner waste-friendly environment,” Mayor Pennisi said.

“Our waste mascot Sort-It Sally is a rock star in the waste arena and she is hugely popular as the ambassador for our waste education program.

“I’m sure the opportunity to have her personally visit the winners’ homes was a treat.”

Winners are grinners! Congratulations to the Williams family from Allora and the Cary family from Warwick.
