Passionate advocate for the awards program, Southern Downs Mayor Vic Pennisi said the Southern Downs is home to a tireless army of big-hearted and socially concerned individuals and the 2024 Australia Day Awards is an important opportunity to reflect and say thanks.

“The Southern Downs is rich with community spirit and awareness, driven by inspiring individuals who are dedicated to freely giving their time without expectation of acknowledgment or fanfare,” Mayor Pennisi said.

“The Australia Day Awards provide a wonderful opportunity to recognise the valuable role that volunteers, advocates and sporting identities play in our community – ordinary people who pitch in selflessly to achieve extraordinary outcomes because they have an unwavering belief in the good of their community.

“These hard-working people deserve to be recognised for making the Southern Downs a more remarkable place to live, work, play and stay.

“If you know someone who deserves a pat on the back for their contribution to the community, I encourage you to put them forward so we can all say thank you.”

Nominations are open from now until midnight on Friday 24 November 2023, with winners being announced on Australia Day 2024. Nominees for the junior awards must be under 18 years of age at 26 January 2024.
