A commemoration service will be held at Leslie Park on 5 December 2023 to honour one hundred years since the unveiling of the Warwick War Memorial Cenotaph, and the community is invited to come together for this time of recognition and remembrance.
Southern Downs Regional Council is privileged to have Her Excellency the Honourable Dr Jeannette Young AC PSM, Governor of Queensland in attendance to acknowledge the landmark occasion by unveiling a commemorative plaque.
What: Warwick War Memorial Centenary Commemoration Service
Where: Warwick War Memorial Cenotaph, Leslie Park
When: 11 am, Tuesday 5 December 2023
In acknowledging the centenary, Southern Downs Mayor Vic Pennisi paid respect to the Warwick War Memorial Cenotaph as a sacred landmark that honoured those who gave their lives to service our country during times of war and encouraged the community to come together for this historic occasion.
“The Warwick War Memorial Cenotaph serves as a powerful symbol of remembrance sacrifice within our community and reflects a proud history,” Mayor Pennisi said.
“The act of recognising and honouring this symbol reflects the Southern Downs’ commitment to remembering and appreciating the contributions and sacrifices of individuals who have played a role in shaping the history and identity of our community.
“It is a great privilege to welcome the Governor of Queensland to the Southern Downs to join us in recognising the Warwick War Memorial Cenotaph and how it creates a shared sense of history, remembrance and community identity.”
Acting President of Warwick RSL Sub Branch Patrick Costigan said, “The unveiling of the Warwick War Memorial Cenotaph’s Centenary Plaque by the Governor this year is of historical significance to the RSL community here in Warwick, because the Warwick RSL Sub-Branch was formed in 1917 and is the oldest continuously operating sub-branch in Queensland.
“This has created a link that has made the cenotaph’s centenary a significant part of the sub-branch’s 106 years. The RSL had a presence on December 5, 1923, and will be present again on December 5, 2023.”
The cenotaph is the centre of most commemoration services in Warwick and means a great deal to the citizens, the descendants of those whose names appear there and to the ex-service community of the region.
