On the back of another very successful Warwick Rodeo, Southern Downs Regional Council has acknowledged the outstanding service of long-time stalwart volunteers Terry Keogh and Jack Dwan as part of its Volunteer Recognition Program.
While the iconic event is supported by a legion of volunteers, there has hardly been a time when Terry and Jack haven’t been on the local scene.
Southern Downs Councillor Marco Gliori said he was privileged to acknowledge the contributions of both men given their unwavering and openly selfless commitment.
“Tellingly, both Terry and Jack suggested the other be honoured instead of them without knowing each other was also being considered,” Councillor Gliori said.
“When I first contacted Jack Dwan and asked him to consider accepting November’s Volunteer of the Month Award, he immediately shied away and suggested I considered someone whom he considered more worthy, such as Terry Keogh. What a pleasure it was to inform Jack that Terry was indeed also a joint recipient of November’s award.
“While Terry is an acclaimed rider in his own right, his impact on the rodeo community has also been notable outside the ring, with 50 years of volunteering under his belt.
“Terry has had two decent stints as Rodeo Chairman, and even took the role as President, but during his years volunteering, it was always out in the paddocks with the dusty volunteers where he felt most comfortable.
“He has seen facilities improved and new buildings erected, he has seen committees come and go, and the ranks of volunteers swell and diminish for various reasons, but Terry has stuck fast, mostly so he can enjoy the company of those other volunteers who he also represents here today.
“Terry encourages those in our community who can to volunteer, but bring along a strong work ethic and commitment, for you will need it.
“Equally deserving, Jack has also racked up decades of service at the showgrounds.
“He was part of that breed of volunteers that created the rodeo showgrounds we enjoy today through hard work and continually turning up.
“For the past decade Jack’s friendly and experienced leadership style had him recognised as Grounds Chairman, where he worked with a host of older and new volunteers, collaborating with Council and private contractors to get the jobs done that needed to be done, and in turn significantly reducing expenses, so the business of hosting the rodeos, campdrafts, shows and various other events could focus on building a sustainable financial future.
“Jack, thanks for volunteering and inspiring the next generation to do so with the same humble character that you have brought to your service for the benefit of Warwick and the Southern Downs community.”
