Southern Downs Regional Council is encouraging residents to clear out old poisons, forgotten pool chemicals and hazardous household products at its upcoming Free Chemical Disposal Drop Off Days in Warwick and Stanthorpe.
With many common household chemicals being flammable, corrosive or potentially explosive, the annual drop off events give residents a safe, responsible and cost free way to dispose of these items.
Portfolio Councillor for Healthy Communities Cr Deane said the initiative is an important part of Council’s commitment to environmental protection and community safety.
“Hazardous chemicals don’t belong in our bins or our environment, and proper disposal by trained professionals prevents dangerous chemicals from ending up in our waterways, soil or kerbside bins,” Cr Deane said.
“Every year we see people take the opportunity to clean out their sheds and garages, and this has a huge impact on keeping our homes, neighbourhoods and environment safe.
“Whether they’re lurking in the shed, tucked behind the laundry sink or gathering dust in the garage, unwanted chemicals should never be thrown in household bins or mixed with general waste.”

Residents are welcome to bring a wide range of common household chemicals provided they are in household quantities of up to 20 litres or 20 kilograms per item.
This includes everyday products such as solvents, household and ammonia based cleaners, pesticides, herbicides, poisons, pool and hobby chemicals, motor fuels, acids, alkalis and even cooking oils.
However, there are some items that cannot be accepted at the drop off days. Chemicals stored in unlabelled or damaged containers will not be accepted as they pose a safety risk.
Flares are also excluded, along with any farming related or commercial quantities of chemicals. Larger scale or agricultural volumes can instead be disposed of through the national ChemClear program. Paint is also excluded, but this can be disposed of through Council’s Paintback program all year around.
Council’s waste partner, Cleanaway, will be on site to ensure all accepted items are handled in a compliant and environmentally sound manner.
