The release of the Queensland Government’s 20-year tourism strategy is set to put the Southern Downs in the driver’s seat to capitalise on the region’s natural assets, food scene and calendar of signature events.
Destination 2045 outlines a bold vision for Queensland to become a global leader in eco-tourism by 2045, including the delivery of 45 new nature-based experiences—a vision that speaks directly to the strengths of the Southern Downs.
With iconic locations like Girraween and Sundown National Parks and Queen Mary Falls, the region is primed to offer unforgettable eco-tourism experiences that connect visitors with nature.
Southern Downs Mayor Melissa Hamilton said the strategy supports the region’s long-term goals and strengthens its position as a key tourism destination in Queensland.
“This roadmap gives us the direction and confidence to grow tourism sustainably and showcase what makes the Southern Downs so special,” Mayor Hamilton said.
“Our unique blend of national parks, local food, award-winning wines and authentic country events already sets us apart, and this strategy recognises the role regions like ours will play in shaping Queensland’s tourism identity.”
Drive tourism remains a key focus of the strategy, with the Southern Downs perfectly positioned on the doorstep of Brisbane and the Gold Coast—making it an easy getaway for road trippers seeking fresh air, open spaces and warm hospitality.
The strategy also places strong emphasis on growing event and culinary tourism, areas where the Southern Downs shines as Queensland’s premier wine destination and host of celebrated festivals such as Jumpers and Jazz in July and the Stanthorpe Apple & Grape Harvest Festival.
“With nature, wine, and warm welcomes at its core, the Southern Downs is ready to take its place on the world stage,” Mayor Hamilton added.
