New sewer pumps and emergency alarm systems will soon be installed in Stanthorpe and Warwick to address aging infrastructure issues and reduce the risk of sewer overflow incidents.

Southern Downs Regional Council has secured $1.24m through the Queensland Government’s 2021-24 Works for Queensland program to install emergency storage tanks, pumps, overflow meters, telemetry and alarms at the Stanthorpe pump stations on Club Road, Fairway Crescent and Tyrel Street and to refurbish the access platform at the Condamine Street Pump Station in Warwick.

Southern Downs Mayor Vic Pennisi said Council was committed to the ongoing provision of reliable sewer services to the community and it had prioritised a number of important asset renewal projects across the region.

“Investing in essential infrastructure is vital to meeting the needs of a growing community and enhancing our region’s liveability,” Mayor Pennisi said.

“Council has identified several pressure points within the sewer network as needing attention and it is working collaboratively with all levels of Government to address the issues that potentially impact the delivery of essential services to the community.

“This latest sewer pump upgrade project aligns with Council’s ongoing commitment to provide reliable sewer services to the community.

“Council is prioritising funding opportunities to address aging infrastructure ahead of creating new assets.

“Council is grateful to the Queensland Government for its significant financial support to make these important upgrades a reality.”

Completion of the project will minimise accidental sewer overflows to the environment during power failures and wet weather events and meet the legislative and compliance requirements of the environmental authority issued by the Department of Environment and Sustainability (DES).

Sewer overflows impacting the environment are considered breaches of the environmental authority and failure to comply with its guidelines can result in financial fines from DES.

The Sewer Pump Station upgrades project is proudly funded by the Queensland Government’s 2021-24 Works for Queensland program in association with Southern Downs Regional Council.

The project is expected to be completed by June 2024.
