Stanthorpe water continues to meet Australian guidelines

9 March 2020

Southern Downs Regional Council has been contacted by some residents regarding a chlorine-like smell in the Stanthorpe water supply and would like to assure residents that the water continues to meet the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines and is safe for use.

Recent rain has brought with it the challenge of altering the iron and manganese levels in the raw water in Connolly Dam which has warranted ongoing changes to the treatment plant processes to minimise the impact of these chemicals on the water quality.

A Council spokesperson said: “The chlorine smell is due to the recent change made at the treatment plant to treat altered iron and manganese levels and is temporary. Council has been regularly checking the residual chlorine in the treated water at the water treatment plant and in reticulation with results showing normal chlorine levels. Residents can be assured that the water flowing from their taps is safe for use.”

Council has engaged a water treatment specialist consultant to seek ongoing assistance and further advice to minimise the impact of reduced water quality on residents.
