Southern Downs Regional Council’s road construction crew was recently recognised at the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia, Queensland (IPWEAQ) 2022 Excellence Awards when they took out the top gong in the Projects Under $1 million category as well as the President’s Award for the Hollinworth Lane Upgrade formerly known as Link Road.

The project, which improved road safety and connectivity for the local community, brought together a number of key stakeholders including the Department of Transport and Main Roads, Queensland Rail and Ergon to deliver the important infrastructure upgrade.

Director Infrastructure Services Gary Murphy said the award was due recognition for the dedication and commitment of the Southern Downs works crew.

“These prestigious industry awards recognise councils and individuals who have demonstrated best practice and innovation in public works projects across Queensland,” Mr Murphy said.

“The Hollinworth Lane Upgrade presented a number of challenges and complexities which required a collaborative approach between multiple government departments.

“It was also an exercise in managing and coordinating new processes and crews have already been applying this new knowledge to other projects in the planning phase that have railway corridor impacts.

“With recent multiple rain events and managing a daunting schedule of emergent and planned maintenance, our crews have been under tremendous pressure to meet community expectations.

“Our crews proudly strive to serve the region and they take immense pride in their work to deliver services to the highest standard.

“They deserve a pat on the back and I would like to congratulate the team for this well-deserved industry accolade.”

The outputs of this project included main road widening to provide both a slip lane and a turning lane, installation of a flag light, formalisation of an occupation crossing to a level crossing, changes to land permissions and construction of 220m of sealed road, drainage infrastructure and driveway crossover construction.
