Horsepower month set to supercharge Southern Downs

26 July 2021

The Southern Downs will be revved up this August with an adrenaline-packed program featuring some of Queensland’s signature horse and motorsport events.

The Historic Leyburn Sprints will host a huge weekend of street sprint action from 21-22 August. The weekend line-up features non-stop grassroots motorsport, classic car and caravan displays, appearances by the Leyburn Legends drivers, markets and a host of other family-oriented attractions.

For the horse-fans, the IOR Rosebowl Polocrosse Carnival will run between 20-22 August at Morgan Park with three days of first-class polocrosse action and club pride on the line. Killarney will host the annual Waddle, Saddle & Pedal on 29 August, and the Sustainable Warwick Horse International 3 Day Event will be held at the Morgan Park grounds from 27-29 August.

There’s drag racing at Carnell Raceway on 7 August and the Sixth Cottonvale Digout at Pete’s Hot Rods between 27-29 August. Morgan Park will host the Southern Downs Road Racing Series between 6-8 August and the Warwick 1000 returns to the raceway from 27-28 August.

Southern Downs Mayor Vic Pennisi said the month-long program is a major highlight of the region’s events calendar.

“Southern Downs Horsepower Month is a new initiative to help promote all of our exciting horsepower-related events happening across the region,” Mayor Pennisi said.

“Warwick has always been known as the Horsepower Capital of Australia so it’s wonderful that we continue to attract significant events to the whole region, as well as our locals also hosting some huge events.

“From Morgan Park Raceway, to polocrosse, rodeo, drags and more, the Southern Downs offers plenty of horsepower action and I encourage all of our residents and visitors to share in the atmosphere this August.”
