General Rate Categories

Rates: Residential, Commercial and general industrial, primary production, heavy industrial, special uses

Rate Categories

Council has a differential general rating scheme that recognises the diverse demographics of the region.  This approach recognises land used for the following purposes:

  • Residential
  • Commercial and general industrial
  • Primary production
  • Heavy industrial
  • Special uses

Information on the differential general rate and minimum general rate can be found in the Revenue Statement (PDF 700.2KB).

How to tell what category you are in

The category that your land has been placed in appears on the first page of your rate notice.  If you don't have your rates notice handy, you can find which of the following category applies  Alternatively, you can print our Notice of Categorisation of Land.

Residential

Commercial and general industrial

Primary production

Heavy industrial

Special uses

See also Council's Notice of Categorisation of Land 2023/2024 (PDF 264.8KB) which provides an explanation of the Land Use Codes listed in the categories above.

Appeal against rate category

Ratepayers have the right to an objection against the differential rate category their land is included in. Council’s differential general rate is determined by using the unimproved value provided by the Department of Resources in conjunction with land use codes determined by the Council.

Please be aware – if you wish to move into a primary production category from a non-primary production category (e.g. change from a residential to an agriculture and farming category) you will need to contact the Department of Resources and apply for a concessional valuation for primary production purposes.
