As one of Queensland's most historic areas, there is a wealth of heritage to be discovered here in the Southern Downs.
The region boasts a great diversity of heritage buildings, from the grand public buildings of sandstone to humble shepherds’ slab huts, and everything in between.
Many well known identities have originated here, one being Jackie Howe, born at Canning Downs Station, and becoming famous in 1892 for shearing more sheep in a day than any other person in the world. Also born on Canning Downs was Charles Chauvel, the founder of cinematography in Australia.
