Duplex (Dual Occupancy)
What is a dual occupancy?
A dual occupancy is defined in the Southern Downs Planning Scheme as:
- Premises containing two dwellings on one lot (whether or not attached) where the use is primarily residential.
The use is commonly called a duplex when the buildings are attached, but a dual occupancy may also be two free standing houses on the one allotment.
Do I need planning approval to build a dual occupancy?
Yes, in the Low density residential zone, the Medium density residential zone and the Rural residential zone approval is required.
For further information regarding building a duplex in one of those zones, please view the Duplex (Dual occupancy) in the Residential & Rural residential zones fact sheet. (PDF 707.4KB)
