Retirement is one of life's biggest transitions, and while many people spend years planning financially for the future, it's just as important to think about how you'll stay connected, active and engaged in the community once you leave the workforce.
As part of Queensland Seniors Month 2026, Southern Downs residents who are approaching retirement, planning their next chapter or already enjoying life beyond work are invited to attend a series of free community sessions designed to help people navigate retirement with confidence and purpose. This year's theme, Connect and Celebrate, reflects the importance of maintaining social connections, supporting wellbeing and embracing the opportunities that come with retirement and later life.
Presented by respected clinical psychologist Dr John Barletta in partnership with Darling Downs Health, Queensland Men's Shed Association and Southern Downs Regional Council, Health and Wellbeing in Later Life: Flourishing in Retirement and Ageing Well will provide practical advice and strategies to support wellbeing before, during and after retirement.
Drawing on both professional expertise and his own experience of retirement, Dr Barletta will explore the emotional and practical realities of retirement, recognising that while major life changes can bring uncertainty, they can also create opportunities for growth, connection and renewed purpose.
Southern Downs Mayor Melissa Hamilton said the sessions encouraged people to think beyond the financial aspects of retirement and consider what they wanted their future to look like.
"Many people spend years preparing financially for retirement, but don't always spend the same amount of time thinking about how they'll stay connected, active and engaged once they leave the workforce," Mayor Hamilton said.
"Whether retirement is just around the corner or still a few years away, these sessions will encourage residents to think about the kind of retirement they want and provide practical strategies to help them make the most of that next chapter."
Portfolio Councillor for Healthy Communities Cr Sarah Deane said retirement planning was about more than leaving a job.
"Retirement can be an exciting opportunity to pursue new interests, spend more time with family and friends, volunteer, travel or simply enjoy a different pace of life," Cr Deane said.
"The Connect and Celebrate theme reminds us that staying connected to others and remaining involved in our communities plays an important role in healthy ageing.
"These sessions will provide practical tools to support wellbeing, relationships and a strong sense of purpose in the years ahead."
Darling Downs Health spokesperson Richard Henshaw said while retirement was an exciting time for people, it could also bring anxiety for many of those used to working their entire lives.
"It is important people plan their retirement and be prepared for what is sometimes a shock to the system. These sessions are a great way to get some professional advice and also talk to others in your community about what retirement will look like for you," Mr Henshaw said.
He said the sessions were also an opportunity for people in retirement to find out more information about who to speak to if they or their loved ones were struggling mentally with the transition into the next stage of life.
Through funding from the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care, Dr Barletta developed the Wellbeing Workbook – A Comprehensive Guide to Creating a Healthy, Happy, Productive, Long Retirement. All attendees will receive a free PDF copy of this valuable resource.
