Community Notice: Precautionary testing following biosolid overflow
01 March 2021
Southern Downs Regional Council is conducting precautionary water sampling at the waterway near the Warwick Sewage Treatment Plant following an overflow of biosolids on the weekend.
While there is no visible sign of entry or evidence of any environmental harm, there is the possibility that a small volume of liquid from the sludge may have reached the river.
A Council spokesperson said that the overflow was reported to the Department of Environment and Science for its consideration as part of Council’s general environmental duty.
“The volume of the overflow was not large enough to cause environmental harms or risk to public health, and while the event does not meet the criteria for notification, we need to ascertain whether contaminants flowed into the river,” the spokesperson said.
“Water sampling has been carried out and the regulator notified of the event as a possible pollution incident.
“This overflow event is regrettable, however Council staff responded immediately to undertake remediation actions to minimise the impact on the environment and community once the overflow was discovered.”
Further information will be provided to the community as it comes to hand.
Any residents or businesses with concerns from the overflow can contact the Customer Service Centre on 1300 697 372.
