Community Announcement: Smoke from planned burn – Horan’s Gorge, Girraween National Park

31 May 2021

The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service in conjunction with Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (Rural Fires) will conduct a planned burn within Horan’s Gorge section of Girraween National Park and sections of adjacent freehold properties from 1 June 2021 through to 3 June 2021 as part of operation cool burn.

As a result, smoke may be seen in the Mt Tully, Storm King, Eukey and Ballandean localities.

This planned burn aims to reduce the volume of forest fuels and create a mosaic pattern of burnt and unburnt areas across different land tenures.

This will help reduce the likelihood of any subsequent wildfires and provide favourable conditions for natural forest regeneration.

Smoke can decrease visibility on the roads, so motorists must drive safely to the conditions.

If suffering from a respiratory condition, close windows and doors, and keep medications close by.
