QLD Premier announces emergency water funding for drought and fire affected Stanthorpe
13 September 2019
It was the announcement that saw the entire Southern Downs community breathe a sigh of relief.
Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk travelled to Stanthorpe today to announce that the State Government would provide much-needed financial assistance to the drought and fire affected Granite Belt.
The State Government will contribute $800,000 per month for water carting and an additional $2.4m for water infrastructure.
Southern Downs Regional Council Mayor Tracy Dobie said that Council was overwhelmingly grateful and appreciative for this essential funding for emergency water.
“There is no question that the Southern Downs community is strong and its residents resilient. They can now rest a little easier knowing that the region’s requests for assistance have been heard and answered by the State Government in the form of this tremendous support,” said Mayor Dobie.
“The funding provided by the State Government means that there will be no need to implement a special levy or utility charge to our community.
“Council is pleased that effective advocacy and a strong partnership with the State Government have resulted in this excellent outcome.
“We are very appreciative that the Premier made this timely announcement earlier than expected.”
Residents can expect further updates from Council regarding water in the near future.
