Council to submit ‘wish list’ for significant future infrastructure projects
2 September 2019
Council has endorsed and will submit to Infrastructure Australia a list of five key infrastructure projects which support the future infrastructure challenges and opportunities facing the Southern Downs.
Council resolved at the August General Meeting to submit the following projects for consideration:
• Pipeline diversion of water from the Clarence River in NSW to Tenterfield, Southern Downs, Western Downs and Toowoomba
• Upgrade of Stanthorpe Wastewater Treatment Plant
• Construction of a water pipeline from Toowoomba to Warwick
• Construction of wastewater pipeline from Warwick to Allora
• Warwick Heavy Vehicle Highway Bypass
Councillor for Transport, Infrastructure and Utilities, Marika McNichol said that Council had identified a wish list of significant infrastructure projects that would shape, steer and secure the region’s future, which it would submit to Infrastructure Australia.
“This is an ambitious list of projects, but also a list of essential infrastructure projects that will benefit our region and build a sustainable future for the Southern Downs,” said Cr McNichol.
“Council has a strong long term vision for the region which involves major infrastructure projects that will support a growing and thriving community.
“Council will submit the prioritised list which solidly supports water-based applications.
“These projects would ensure that our region has access to water supplies and water security after the current drought breaks.”
Infrastructure Australia invited feedback and submissions to the Australian Infrastructure Audit 2019 which identified areas of concern and growth facing the country’s infrastructure over the next 15 years.
