Council announces relief with rate extension
13 September 2019
Southern Downs Regional Council has announced that it will extend the payment due date and discount period for all rate payers by four weeks in recognition of the recent bushfire and drought hardships.
This initiative was proposed by Southern Downs Regional Council Deputy Mayor Jo McNally when the bushfires broke out one week ago and was today resolved at a Special Meeting of Council.
Deputy Mayor Jo McNally said that the region has suffered significant hardship with the bushfires on the back of a crippling drought and it was important to provide the opportunity for ratepayers to have flexible payment options.
“Council recognises the changed circumstances with the recent bushfires being so close to the due date for the payment of general rates,” said Deputy Mayor McNally.
“Council took into consideration that ratepayers affected by the fires and the drought may be facing hardship from the loss of income as well as physical and mental fatigue.”
The payment due date and the discount period end date for the rate notices issued on 15 July 2019 and due on 13 September 2019, has been extended to 11 October 2019.
Payments plans are available and Council officers can provide more information regarding these options.
