Mayor acknowledges Lister’s apology

23 October 2019

Following the release of the transcript of last night’s sitting of the Queensland Parliament, Southern Downs Regional Council Mayor Tracy Dobie noted the apology and withdrawal of comments made by the Member for Southern Downs, Mr James Lister.

Mr Lister’s comments were as follows: “During the debate I made a number of remarks about the mayor of Southern Downs Regional Council.  I regret that I did so. I withdraw those comments and apologise to her.”

In his address last week, Mr Lister made comments referring to the Mayor of Southern Downs as being “toxic”.

Mr Lister’s comments last week prompted Council to question whether the local member had crossed the line of Parliamentary Privilege.  These comments were also questioned by Local Government Association of Queensland President, Cr Mark Jamieson.

Southern Downs Regional Council Mayor Tracy Dobie today said: “I acknowledge the apology made to me by James Lister, Member for the Southern Downs, in Parliament last night.

“Since the remarks were made I have been contacted by many residents from within the Southern Downs but also people outside the region expressing their disappointment in the nature of the comments made by Mr Lister using Parliamentary Privilege.

“It is essential that whilst the whole of the Southern Downs Region is experiencing the worst drought on record that all three levels of Government work together to achieve the best outcomes for our residents.”
