Southern Downs Libraries pop-up at Rose City Shopping Centre for Library & Information Week

20 May 2019

Think libraries only offer books? Visit Southern Downs Regional Libraries this week during Library and Information Week and discover the exciting things happening at our libraries every day!

This week, Southern Downs Regional Libraries will host a series of activities as part of the Australian Library and Information Association’s (ALIA) annual Library and Information Week.

As part of the week’s festivities, SDRC is also opening a pop-up library at the Rose City Shopping Centre to help celebrate the important role libraries play in our communities.

Councillor for Health, Cultural Diversity and Learning Neil Meiklejohn said libraries have been an important hub for our region since the Warwick and Stanthorpe Libraries opened over 50 years ago.

“Libraries offer everyone a safe space where they can learn and connect with people from not only our community but globally as well,” Cr Meiklejohn said.

“Nearly 700 people visit our libraries every day, and these visitors have access to a wide range of free recreational, educational, technological and cultural services.

“Young children come to the library to discover the joys of reading, seniors can learn about the newest technology, local scholars can do research for their next project or visitors can relax and read the local news.

“The pop-up library will take advantage of the foot traffic in Rose City to promote all the excellent services and activities our libraries offer our region.”

Activities on offer at the pop-up library include coding and robotics sessions, activity table, daily storytime and rhymetimes as well borrowing library books and other resources. All visitors to the pop-up library can also put their names into a draw to win a $50 gift voucher.

Residents can visit the pop-up library at Rose City Shopping Centre starting Monday, 20 May until Friday, 24 May from 9am to 5pm.

SDRC has libraries in Allora, Stanthorpe and Warwick with a mobile library servicing Dalveen, Karara, Killarney, Leyburn, Maryvale, Pratten, Wheatvale and Yangan.
