Morgan Park hero takes out remarkable win at Bathurst

Southern Downs native Matt Campbell took out first place at the Bathurst 12 Hour race over the weekend, leading his Porsche team to an historic victory.

The victory marked the first time Porsche had ever won the Bathurst 12 Hour, thanks to Campbell snatching victory from Englishman Jake Dennis with less than nine minutes left in the race at Bathurst’s Mount Panorama.

“On behalf of the Southern Downs, I would like to congratulate Matt on his remarkable win over the weekend,” Southern Downs Mayor Tracy Dobie said.

“Matt began his career at Morgan Park Raceway so this is a proud sporting moment for the Southern Downs.

“Motorsport fans across the region were cheering for him to pull out the exciting victory and couldn’t be prouder to see him standing atop the winner’s podium.”

Councillor for Events, Sport, Parks and Recreation and keen motorsport fan Yve Stocks said Matt Campbell comes from a long line of motorsport fanatics.

“Matt has risen through the ranks from the early days of his career at Morgan Park and the Queensland Super Sprints Series,” Cr Stocks said.

“I am delighted to see Matt win races at the highest levels on the international stage. Morgan Park Raceway is one of the best raceways in Australia, and Matt demonstrates the type of talent the raceway attracts.

“The Campbell family is one of Warwick’s biggest motorsport families.

“Matt’s grandfather managed Morgan Park Raceway for many years and his family have been involved in Warwick motorsport for a long time.

From hosting events for the Queensland Super Sprints Series to the Australian Motor Racing Series and Australian SuperBike Championship, the Morgan Park Raceway has a full calendar of events to entertain motorsport fans across the region, including the start of the 2019 Queensland Super Sprints Series season this weekend.
