State Government and SDRC join forces to combat invasive pests in Southern Downs

Southern Downs Regional Council has joined forces with the State Government in a bid to combat invasive pests across the region.

In July, Council’s Local Laws team collaborated with Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS), providing support to treat a significant area of Tree Pear at Morgan Park Conservation Park outside of Warwick.

QPWS – part of the Department of Environment and Science – and SDRC have worked together on a number of projects to take a coordinated approach to manage pests on State land.

Together, SDRC and QPWS treated 89 hectares of tree pear.

Southern Downs Councillor for Rural, Environmental, Sustainability & Waste Management, Cameron Gow said the partnership between SDRC and QPWS had achieved a great outcome.

“Tree Pear has been a problem at the conservation park, locally known as the Kangaroo Reserve, for some time, so it is great to see a cooperative approach make a big difference in the treatment of invasive pests,” Cr Gow said.

“I would like to acknowledge the efforts of QPWS as well as SDRC’s Pest Management team. By working together, they have successfully cleared a significant amount of Tree Pear at the Kangaroo Reserve.

“This was another example of Council and QPWS working closely together and I hope we continue to do so into the future; a big thanks to all the team who assisted with the program.”

Cr Gow also commended the effort of SDRC Local Laws Officer Lloyd Hilton who developed a new Tree Pear spear.

“Mr Hilton spent many hours developing new spraying equipment which can treat Tree Pear more safely and efficiently,” Cr Gow said.

“The new treatment is more cost-effective and less labour intensive and Mr Hilton should be commended for his commitment and dedication to dealing with pests in new and innovative ways.”

Southern Downs Regional Council is committed to pest management across the Southern Downs. To report sightings of invasive pests on Council land, please contact 1300 My SDRC. For more information on how to manage invasive pests visit the SDRC website at www.sdrc.qld.gov.au
