Southern Downs seniors ready to shine for Queensland Seniors Week 2018

The region’s seniors are set to shine when Southern Downs Regional Council’s Seniors Week 2018 activities swing into action from Saturday 18 August.

Young and old will come to together to take part in a number of events and activities to celebrate the Southern Downs as a region for all ages!

Queensland Seniors Week 2018 will be celebrated from 18-26 August and is an opportunity for Queenslanders of all ages to join together and celebrate the valuable contributions of older people.

Coordinated by the Council on the Ageing (COTA) Queensland, Seniors Week improves community attitudes towards older people and ageing and encourages community participation by older people, including those from Indigenous and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

Southern Downs Mayor Tracy Dobie, said Council is encouraging all residents, young at heart, to take part and help celebrate Seniors Week across the region.

“Seniors Week is a wonderful opportunity for residents to celebrate the valuable contributions our older residents make to their families and friends and the whole community,” Cr Dobie said.

“It’s so important that our seniors feel valued so I urge everyone, the young and the young at heart, to come along and join in recognising the importance of our older generations.”

From museum tours, exercise programs to craft workshops and information sessions, the Southern Downs Senior’s Week Calendar of Events is bursting with a variety of activities the whole community will enjoy, with major expos to be held in Stanthorpe and Warwick.

Hosted by Community Development Services Stanthorpe, the Granite Belt Expo will take place at Stanthorpe Civic Centre on Wednesday, August 22 and is proudly supported by Southern Downs Regional Council.

Celebrating the theme, Mind Body Spirit and Craft, facilitators will host interactive activities that inspired and enriched by this year’s chosen theme.

A fashion parade will lend the event a touch of glamour and a light lunch can be enjoyed for a gold coin donation. String Band and local group The Guys and Dolls will keep everyone toe-tapping through the afternoon.

Meanwhile, the 12th Annual Seniors Leisure and Lifestyle Expo will be held at the Warwick Senior Citizens Hall on Thursday, 23 August and will feature more than 50 information stalls dedicated to senior’s lifestyle, leisure and wellbeing.
