New Southern Downs Youth Council ready to inspire region's future

Southern Downs Regional Council is thrilled to announce the appointment of 14 inspired youth leaders to the region’s new Youth Council.

The new Southern Downs Youth Council (SDYC) is a voice for young people who live, work, study or volunteer in the region, to help inform and shape Council activities and decisions.

At its General Meeting held on 26 July 2017, Council resolved to adopt a model for establishment of a Youth Council to replace the Young Leaders program, which concluded at the end of 2017.

The new SDYC is an advisory committee which will be a voice for local youth to raise issues, exchange ideas, discuss community concerns, provide input in to Council planning, programs and services, and influence local government decision making processes.

SDYC members will directly engage with Southern Downs Mayor, Tracy Dobie, Councillors and Council officers on issues which are important to them.

Each school across the region was invited to nominate two Year 10 students for their regional passion and pride, and leadership potential.

“It is vital they have a voice and are able to work alongside our decision makers to share their ideas and insights into what matters most, now and in the future.

“Congratulations to all of the new SDYC members. I am looking forward to working with you and being inspired by your passion and energy.”
