Asbestos containing material identified at Boston Park Wallangarra

A small amount of asbestos containing material (ACM) fragments (bonded asbestos) were located at Boston Park, Wallangarra on Thursday, 13 December 2018. No air testing was completed as it is not required due to the low risk posed by the type of bonded asbestos found on site. These types of ACM fragments present minimal risk and an air monitoring program is not always necessary for the removal of non-friable asbestos material, or during asbestos related work.

A local resident found the material and alerted Southern Downs Regional Council and proactive steps were immediately taken to manage the issue. Small samples were found and a thorough inspection was carried out on site by a SDRC Environmental Health Officer on the same day as the complaint was received. The following day - Friday, 14 December - Council’s Acting Manager for Environmental Services completed a second comprehensive site inspection of the area and its surrounds.

Testing of the samples was commissioned on 14 December 2018 and the area was clearly marked and fenced off to ensure the safety of any community members using the park. Quotations were sought from a qualified asbestos contractor prior to Christmas and works are scheduled to be complete by the end of next week, 11 January 2019.

Council is of the view the fragments may have been contained in unexposed soil subsurface and might have originated through the trenching process for the electrical conducting during the installation of a new barbecue in the park.
