The Southern Downs has a more diverse economy than the significant majority of other local government areas across Queensland. the 'big five' industries in relation to Gross regional Product input are agriculture, construction, manufacturing, retail and health care and social services.
During the 2014-2015 year financial year, the local economy of the Southern Downs was $1,845 billion, and grew at an annual rate of 4.8%, which is significantly higher than the queensland average (2.3 percent) during the same period.
Over 4,000 local businesses, with a recorded annual turnover of $1.3 billion in the 2014-2015 financial year operate in the Southern Downs.
According to the Queensland market monitor, the Southern Downs recorded a significantly higher gross rental yield for single residential houses (5.6 percent) than Brisbane (3.5 percent) in the September Quarter 2015.
